The FreeStyle Lite is my fingerprick blood glucose meter of choice when going through insurance. Made by Abbott (same company as the Libre 3), it's the most cost-effective option if you have good insurance coverage.
Best for: When you have good insurance. More cost-effective than out-of-pocket options, but comes with restrictions on how many strips you can get per day.
Insurance coverage comes with strings attached. You're typically limited to a certain number of strips per day (often 3-4), regardless of how many times you actually need to test. If you're having a rough day with fluctuating blood sugar, those limits can be frustrating.
That's why I keep the ReliOn Platinum as a backup for unlimited testing without restrictions.
Clinical studies show strong accuracy with a correlation coefficient of r² > 0.99. Precision at glucose levels under 100 mg/dL is within ~3.4 mg/dL, which is solid for daily management decisions.
