The House Remodel: 55 Days In

January 6, 2026

Move-in target -- March 8, 2026

Today's Work

Made it to the house around 6:30 after a quick dinner and heading straight there from work. Started by demoing that weird little soffit frame that was built to hang the cupboards on.

In the process, I realized I hated the tile. The yellowish color and terra-cotta look really bothered me. So the tile is out now too.

The Wire Mesh Nightmare

On the corners of that box frame, they mudded wire mesh into the sheetrock. It's been a nightmare to deal with. I've had to cut it with my oscillating tool using a titanium bit. That's the only thing that really gets through it in those corners. Quite the adventure.

Highlight of the Day

My dad put in more work on the electrical. He pulled in the electrical to the junction boxes and it looks super clean. The lights are basically in place and ready to go. Same with the outlets.

He's been putting in work over there. Super appreciative of him. By the end of this project, he might even be a master electrician. Not certified, but in my eyes, definitely certified.

Visitors

Had some visitors today: Claire and Sam, her boyfriend. Really good to see them. I haven't seen them in a while. Sam's in town from Maryland and works in software sales, which is cool. We talked about that. They really liked the yard.

Good to see my mom and pops too. They went to Hart and Hill for dinner. Great place if you haven't been. Definitely get the Smashburger. 10 out of 10.

What's Next

Ordered another dumpster. Hoping this is the last one. Also hoping I don't get an insane overcharge on the tonnage. Must've got wood, tile, and tree stuff in there.

For the kitchen tile, I'm thinking big slabs of gray or something. Exciting because we can basically design it however we want now.

Making progress every day. Hopefully it starts feeling like a home soon once we start putting things back together. Still a lot of work ahead.

Happy birthday Ruby. You're the best sister anyone could ever ask for, and I'm proud to be your brother. Can't wait for you and Collin to move to Salt Lake and be neighbors.
