Construction Takeoff for Codex

Inspect saved projects, trace plan linework, and prepare changes for review in the Construction Takeoff Mac app.

Local preview. This plugin has not been submitted to or approved by the public plugin directory. It requires Codex running locally on your Mac and the separately installed Construction Takeoff app and MCP companion. It does not provide cloud access.

Get the Mac app · Download Codex plugin 0.1.3 · Checksums

Set up the connection

  1. Open Construction Takeoff. In 3D Model → AI tools, export the MCP companion or use Connect your AI tools → Export AI setup if your build offers that panel.
  2. Install Python 3.10 or newer. Follow the exported companion instructions and run sh install-takeoff-mcp.sh from the folder containing that script. The launcher should be installed at ~/.local/bin/takeoff-mcp. Linework tools additionally require PyMuPDF in that same Python environment.
  3. Download and unzip the plugin above. Open Terminal in the extracted plugin folder, with the Codex CLI installed, and run:
codex plugin marketplace add .
codex plugin add construction-takeoff@construction-takeoff-download

Disable the older takeoff-x-local plugin if installed, to avoid two connections to the same companion. Keep the extracted folder in place for marketplace updates. Do not replace unrelated client settings.

  1. Start a new Codex chat. Save your project in Construction Takeoff, then ask:
Use Construction Takeoff to check health and capabilities.
List my saved projects and explain any capability gaps.
Do not create or apply changes.

A successful health response verifies the companion connection. Exporting setup files or seeing the plugin in a list alone does not.

What you can do

Plans and quantities

List saved projects and sheets; inspect page scale; summarize and trace vector linework; render a sheet region; calculate length, area or counts from geometry; stage traced measurements for native review. Read native quantity exports and identify exclusions. Calibrate and import drawings in the Mac app before measuring.

Models and calculations

Inspect and search saved model elements, propose supported dimension/material/elevation changes, inspect and evaluate calculation types, and prepare calculation changes. The app reviews and applies proposals with Undo.

Estimates and rendering

Read an app-exported estimate context, prepare supported estimate changes and return bid-sheet CSV content. Inspect, validate and stage supported GLB rendering revisions. Export saved rendering assets. These tools do not submit bids to an owner.

Current limits

Reads use saved files, not unsaved app state. Native quantity snapshots require a fresh app export. Approximate saved-file quantity exports are not authoritative bid quantities. Creating projects and linking Hardhat jobs via legacy direct writes are disabled in this plugin; use the Mac app. Automatic full-plan takeoff, live app command execution and authenticated cloud access are not provided. Native plan analysis is an optional development helper, not a production prerequisite.

Review before applying

When Codex creates a proposal, it should return its location and the corresponding native review action. A proposal has not changed your project. Review it in Construction Takeoff, apply supported changes, save, and ask Codex to inspect the saved result. If the project revision changed, create a fresh proposal.
