Privacy policy

Effective October 8, 2026 · Book Social for iPhone and iPad

Book Social is operated by Mason Earl. This policy describes the information used to provide your account, reading library, quizzes and discussion features, and how to request help or deletion.

Information the app uses

  • Account and profile: your Apple sign-in identifier, name and email address provided through Apple, your Book Social user identifier, and profile details you choose to add, such as a username, bio or photo. Apple may provide a private relay email address instead of your personal address.
  • Reading and quiz data: your collections, collection membership, reading status, ratings, private notes, quiz answers, scores, attempt dates and time spent on quizzes. These support your library, history and progress displays.
  • Discussion and reports: comments you post, their associated display information, and content reports you submit. Comments and shared discussion information are visible to other signed-in readers. Your private notes and collections are restricted to your account.
  • Support messages: the contact details, text and attachments you send when requesting help, suggesting books or reporting an issue.
  • Technical information: Firebase services process service usage and diagnostic information needed to operate their software. Server requests may produce logs containing information such as IP addresses, request times and error details for operation, troubleshooting and abuse prevention.

Why we use it

We use this information to authenticate you, save and sync your library, show quiz progress, provide discussion features, respond to support requests, investigate reports, protect accounts and complete deletion requests.

Book Social does not show advertising, sell personal information, or use your reading activity to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.

Storage and service providers

The app keeps reading data on your device and uses Google Firebase Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage and Cloud Functions to provide account and cloud features. Access to private account records is restricted by account-specific rules. Data travels over encrypted network connections; this is not a claim of end-to-end encryption.

Apple provides Sign in with Apple and processes App Store purchases. We do not receive your Apple password or payment card number. Support email is processed by the email providers used to send and receive it. Data may be processed in the United States and other locations where those providers operate.

For additional information, see Firebase’s privacy and security information and Apple’s privacy policy.

Permissions and choices

You choose whether to add a profile photo and which image to select. Profile settings let you edit your display information and email-sharing preference. Version 2.3 defaults new profiles to keeping email private. Sharing your email with Apple sign-in does not itself give consent to display it to other readers.

You can edit or remove reading notes and collection entries in the app. Signing out does not delete your account or all locally saved reading data. If you need to recover an older library, contact support before uninstalling.

Account deletion and retention

Version 2.3 includes Settings → Delete account, with Apple confirmation. If this is unavailable or a service error prevents completion, email hi@masonearl.com to request assistance. We may verify your ownership before acting.

Completed account deletion removes the account’s active cloud profile, profile images, quiz progress, collections, saved reading records, comments, shared book data and associated content reports, then removes its Firebase sign-in account. The initiating device clears that account’s local store after confirming completion. Other offline devices may retain cached data until they reconnect or their app data is removed.

A temporary account-linked deletion record is scheduled to expire seven days after completion; provider expiry processing may take additional time. A completion receipt containing a hash and completion status, without the account identifier or reading content, remains so an offline device can later finish local cleanup. Pending deletion jobs are retained until cleanup succeeds.

Older local data whose account owner could not be identified is preserved separately and is not automatically assigned to or deleted with a signed-in account. To ask about recovery or explicitly remove the older copy, open Settings → Older reading data → Manage older device data. Removing that copy requires a separate confirmation and does not remove the current account’s library. Support correspondence and operational logs may remain as needed to resolve requests, maintain security or meet legal obligations. Provider backups and logs may persist under their retention policies; deletion does not promise immediate removal from every backup.

Requests and updates

Contact hi@masonearl.com with privacy, access, correction or deletion requests. Your location may give you additional data-protection rights. We will assess and respond to requests under applicable requirements.

We will update this page when the app’s data practices change and revise the effective date above. These Book Social support and privacy pages do not use advertising or analytics scripts; their hosting provider processes ordinary web requests.
